Course title Chemical Reactor Design
Lecturer prof. dr hab. in¿. Jerzy Ba³dyga
dr in¿. Wioletta Podgórska (design project)
Semester Winter
Description The course deals with modern methods of design of chemical reactors that combine thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions with models for transport phenomena. It is shown how chemical reactions, fluid mechanics (including chaotic advection and application of CFD), mixing, heat and mass transfer affect distributions of concentration and temperature as well as resulting reaction yield in multi-dimensional, non-ideal, homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactors.
Prerequisites The knowledge of chemical reaction engineering, process dynamics and transport phenomena (momentum, energy and mass transfer) is assumed.
Course content Non-ideal reactors are interpreted as systems with distributed parameters, closed and open systems. Homogeneous, non-ideal reactors: measures of homogeneity and heterogeneity, reactions in laminar flow, chaotic advection and lamellar mixing models, reactive turbulent mixing, closure problems, advanced models of micromixing, application of CFD. Heterogeneous reactors: models for structure of porous media, modelling of chemical reaction, mass and heat transfer in porous media, design of catalytic reactors, models for multiphase flows, chemical reaction in multiphase dispersion, case studies for gas-liquid, liquid-liquid and gas/liquid-solid reactors.
