Course title Mathematics III
Lecturer prof. Maciej M±czyński
dr Eugenia Ciborowska-Wojdyga
Semester Winter
Description The aim of the course is to introduce the student to mathematical methods in chemical engineering. After the fundamental courses of mathematics at the first year, the present course is specialized and oriented for chemical engineering, developing the methods of solving heat equation as well as difference equations and variational calculus.
Prerequisites The knowledge of mathematics on the level of first-year course (mathematical analysis and linear algebra), foundations of physics.
Course content Orthogonal systems, orthogonalization procedures, Fourier series, orthogonal approximations, classification of linear partial differential equations, canonical forms of PDE, heat conducting equation in one dimension, heat equation in cylinder and sphere, difference operators, interpolation and extrapolation by the method of Newton and Lagrange'a, numerical differentiation and integration, linear difference equations with application to rectification columns, foundations of variational calculus.
